2015 Field Trips
Every photographer needs fresh subjects. The Atlanta Photographic Society’s (APS’s) field trips planned for 2015 provide numerous opportunities to shoot something new and different. Getting out and about with other APS members will invigorate your creative juices, help you see new things in new ways, and sharpen your eyes and camera skills to realize new photographic possibilities. And, it’s fun!
Our informal field trips for 2015 offer a wide range of situations and subjects to challenge every photographer. Here are some of the options:
1. Monastery of the Holy Spirit: Sat. March 28 Quiet contemplation may be rare in bustling Atlanta, but at a place close-by, the Monastery of the Holy Spirit near Conyers, peace and tranquility are the norm.

2. Shields Ethridge Farm: Sat. April 18 Up for some time travel? The Shields Ethridge Farm near Jefferson, GA will take you back in time to a Georgia Piedmont farm with a multitude of buildings and artifacts from the early 1800’s to the 1930’s. And on a special day, the Cultivators Market!

3. Birmingham, AL: May 1-2 We’ll venture a bit farther away too. Birmingham’s Sloss Furnaces offer up a healthy dose of large scale industrial decay, with lots of other interesting history and subjects nearby.

4. Zoo Atlanta: Sunday June 14 (tentative) This is one of the best zoos in the country. With a wide spectrum of animals, and people, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel - your camera can’t miss. I got lucky at the zoo a few years ago and found one of my long lost relatives, deep in thought.

5. Bill Picket Rodeo: August 1-2; Assignment Zone (A-Z) Shoot Need a ride? The Bill Picket Rodeo at Conyers has a wild ride for you! So buckle up your cameras for cowboys on broncos. Want to take a spin? Bull riding is the way to go. Now that’s quick acceleration. This will be APS’s Assignment Zone shoot, so don’t miss it.

6. Chattanooga, TN: early November Lookout! You might see seven states from the top of Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN. Or a big river, or a big aquarium, and a big heap of other interesting sights, all begging for your shutter to click.
I don’t have any Chattanooga images handy, so… Google to the rescue. To get an idea of some of the possibilities, click the link to check out these marvelous Chattanooga area photographs by professional Steven Llorca. Steven is obviously partial to a wide angle, HDR (High Dynamic Range) approach. My favorite is “River of Fog.” What’s yours?
